WESTON MODEL 80 ANALYZER (MULTIMETER) were built in the 1950s and called analyzers at that time. Now they are known as multimeters. The D'Arsonval/Weston meter is positioned vertically instead of laying flat horizontally to exemplify their design. Weston created the D'Arsonval movement which used a fine metal spring to give proportional measurement and a built-in permanent field magnets made deflection independent of the position of the meter. These features enabled dispensing with wheatstone bridges, and made measurement quick and easy. By adding a series or shunt resistor, more than one range of voltage or current could be measured with one movement.
